What International Seo Tactics Drive Expedia 5

Summary

Expedia SEO runs on a country-code domain per major market, a 48-entry hreflang cluster across 34 domains and localized travel guide pages. Semrush estimates expedia.com plus its Canada, Mexico, India and UK sites earn about 44.3M monthly organic visits (Semrush estimate, September 2026). This teardown covers what you can copy.

Expedia SEO is a rare example of international search you can study in public. Instead of 1 global site, Expedia runs a country domain for each major market, links those sites with hreflang tags, and localizes the travel pages people land on from Google.

Traffic figures go stale fast, so we re-pulled them in September 2026. Traffic numbers are Semrush estimates, tactics are tied to Expedia’s visible page source, and rules on hreflang and domains come from Google Search Central.

Expedia SEO in 2026: The Quick Answer

Expedia’s international SEO rests on 3 things you can check yourself: a country-code domain for each major market, a 48-entry hreflang cluster that links every locale version, and localized travel guide pages. Semrush estimates expedia.com and its Canada, Mexico, India and UK sites earn about 44.3M monthly organic visits (Semrush estimate, September 2026).

Brief Overview of Expedia

Expedia is an online travel brand for hotels, flights, car rentals, vacation homes and activities, owned by Expedia Group. The group also runs Hotels.com and Vrbo, and it has acquired brands such as Orbitz, Travelocity and Wotif, according to its About us page.

For SEO teams, Expedia is a live case study in scale: the hreflang cluster on its homepages covers 48 locale versions in 18 languages across 34 domains (checked September 2026).

Expedia Traffic by Country Site: Semrush Data for September 2026

The US site, expedia.com, leads with about 24.2M monthly organic visits, and the 4 country sites covered here add about 20.1M more (Semrush estimate, September 2026). Canada narrowly beats Mexico, and India’s site alone now earns about 5.5M visits a month.

Expedia SEO traffic by country site: expedia.com, expedia.ca, expedia.mx, expedia.co.in and expedia.co.uk organic visits

Each figure comes from the site’s home-country Semrush database. Semrush reports mobile rankings in separate databases, which aren’t added here, so treat these as directional estimates, not Expedia’s own analytics.

Global market share: how much expedia.com depends on the US

Across the 121 non-mobile country databases where Semrush lists expedia.com, the US accounts for about 81% of its estimated organic traffic. India is next at about 431K visits a month, even though Expedia runs a dedicated Indian site. A strong .com can keep ranking in markets that have their own local domain.

Traffic and keywords by country site

The UK site has the lowest traffic of the 4 despite the second-largest keyword footprint, which points to tougher competition for UK travel terms. India shows the opposite pattern: about half of Mexico’s keywords, yet nearly the same traffic, likely from a smaller set of high-volume flight and hotel terms. Both readings are upGrowth analysis, not Expedia data.

How Expedia Implemented International SEO

Expedia gives each major market its own domain, connects every locale version with hreflang, and localizes URLs, language and currency on the pages that rank. Here’s what we found in the source of 5 Expedia homepages and a Bengaluru hotels guide on expedia.co.in in September 2026.

Expedia international SEO setup: domains, hreflang cluster, language subfolders and localized pages

1. Expedia key markets and URL structure

Canada, the UK, Mexico and India each have a country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), not a subfolder: expedia.ca, expedia.co.uk, expedia.mx and expedia.co.in. The US site sits on expedia.com.

2. Hreflang tags

Every homepage we checked carries the same 48 hreflang annotations, including a self-reference (expedia.co.in lists itself as en-IN). Google’s guide to localized versions says each language version must list itself and all other versions, and if 2 pages don’t point to each other, the tags are ignored. We found no x-default value, although Google recommends one as a fallback.

3. Language subfolders inside country domains

Expedia serves extra languages from subfolders. French-speaking Canadians get expedia.ca/fr/ (fr-CA), and expedia.com serves Spanish at /es/ and Simplified Chinese at /cn/. In total, 14 of the 48 hreflang URLs use a language subfolder.

4. Page-level hreflang on travel guides

The Bengaluru hotels guide on expedia.co.in carries 47 hreflang links to its equivalents on other Expedia sites. All versions share the destination ID d6053307, while the slug changes by market, such as Bengaluru-Hoteles.d6053307.Guia-Viajes-Hoteles on expedia.mx.

5. Content localization and localized keywords

For Expedia, content localization goes beyond translation. The Mexico homepage runs in Spanish, the Bengaluru guide shows prices in rupees (₹) and says Expedia India in its title, and French Canadian URLs use local place names. Google’s multi-regional sites guide lists local language and currency among its audience signals.

Expedia doesn’t publish how it researches keywords, but the localized slugs suggest market-level choices rather than word-for-word translation (upGrowth analysis). Our guide to multilingual keyword research covers that approach.

6. Technical SEO basics

Each Expedia page we checked carries a self-referencing canonical tag, and the robots.txt files block search results, checkout and login paths. That keeps crawl effort on pages that can actually rank.

ccTLD vs Subfolder: What Google Says About Expedia’s Setup

Google Search Central says ccTLDs give a strong signal that a site is meant for a specific country. Subfolders are easier to run but make geotargeting less obvious from the URL alone.

ccTLD vs subfolder comparison for Expedia international SEO based on Google Search Central

Country-code domains (ccTLDs)

Google lists clear geotargeting, irrelevant server location and easy separation of sites as ccTLD pros. The cons: they’re expensive, need more infrastructure and can only target a single country. That’s why expedia.ca needs a /fr/ subfolder for French speakers.

Subdirectories, subdomains and parameters

Subfolders like example.com/de/ are easy to set up and low maintenance on the same host, but users might not recognize geotargeting from the URL and separating sites is harder. Subdomains allow different server locations but blur whether “de” means language or country. Google marks URL parameters like site.com?loc=de as not recommended.

Other signals Google uses

Google also weighs hreflang, server location, local addresses and phone numbers, local language and currency, and links from other local sites. It ignores locational meta tags such as geo.position, and it advises against automatic language redirects and IP-based content changes.

Backlink Profile for Expedia’s India Site

The India site, expedia.co.in, has about 6,621 referring domains, 162,147 backlinks and an Authority Score of 67 (Semrush estimate, September 2026). More of those linking domains are hosted in the US than in any other country, with India a distant second.

Top countries for backlinks

Semrush maps referring domains to countries by server IP. On that basis, the top 3 for expedia.co.in are the United States (1,679 domains), India (347) and Singapore (197). Google notes that some sites use CDNs or host abroad, so server location isn’t a definitive signal of audience.

Local links still matter, since Google lists links from local sites as a targeting signal. But expedia.co.in’s profile is far from purely local, which suggests a strong global brand can rank in a country with a largely international link base (upGrowth analysis).

Lessons From Expedia’s Marketing Strategy for Your International SEO

You don’t need 34 domains to borrow Expedia’s approach. Start with a clear URL structure, a complete hreflang cluster and properly localized pages for your top markets. These recommendations are upGrowth analysis.

Expedia SEO checklist for international SEO: URL structure, hreflang, x-default, localization and local links

1. Localization

Translate pages, use local keywords, show local currency and use local place names in URLs where it helps, as Expedia does on expedia.mx and expedia.ca/fr/.

2. Content creation

Build pages for what each market searches. Expedia’s templated travel guides show how destination pages scale local coverage, a model we also break down in MakeMyTrip’s programmatic SEO.

3. Link building

Earn relevant links from publications, directories and partners in each target country. Don’t panic if your profile skews international at first.

4. Technical SEO

Get the basics right: reciprocal hreflang with self-references, an x-default fallback, self-canonicals and crawl rules for search and checkout pages. Our free hreflang tag generator helps you avoid syntax errors.

5. Advertising and promotion

Use Google Ads, social media and local directories for visibility while organic rankings build, and to learn which local keywords convert.

Expedia SEO FAQs

Does Expedia use subfolders or country domains for international SEO?

Mostly country domains. Its hreflang cluster covers 48 locale versions across 34 domains, including expedia.co.uk, expedia.mx and expedia.co.in. Expedia uses language subfolders for extra languages, such as expedia.ca/fr/ for French Canada or expedia.com/es/ for Spanish. Google Search Central says ccTLDs give a strong signal that a site targets a specific country.

How much organic traffic does Expedia get?

Semrush estimates expedia.com earns about 24.2M monthly organic visits in the US, and its Canada, Mexico, India and UK sites add about 20.1M in their home markets, for about 44.3M in total (Semrush estimate, September 2026). These figures leave out Semrush’s separate mobile databases and aren’t Expedia’s own analytics, so use them as directional benchmarks.

How does Expedia handle link-building across different countries?

Expedia doesn’t publish its link-building approach, but Semrush data shows the outcome. The India site has about 6,621 referring domains, and the top hosting countries are the US with 1,679 and India with 347 (Semrush estimate, September 2026). Google treats links from other local sites as a targeting signal, so earning links in each market is still a sensible priority.

What does an Expedia SEO manager need to get right?

Expedia doesn’t publish a role description we could verify, so this is upGrowth analysis. At Expedia’s scale, the hard part is consistency: keeping 48 hreflang entries reciprocal on every templated page, localizing slugs and titles per market, keeping crawlers out of search and checkout paths, and watching overlap, such as expedia.com earning about 431K monthly visits in India despite a dedicated Indian site.

Is Expedia SEO the same as it was in 2017?

We couldn’t verify Expedia’s 2017 setup from a primary source, so we won’t compare old numbers. What’s visible in September 2026 is a country domain for each major market, 48 hreflang entries in 18 languages and localized travel guide pages. If you’re reading older analysis, check its claims against Expedia’s live page source before copying any tactic.

Your Next Move: Apply These Lessons to Your Own Markets

Expedia’s setup works because domain, hreflang, canonical and localized content all point to the same market. Audit your site on those 4 points before you launch a new country.
