ChatGPT Ads · India · Live since 27 August 2026
ChatGPT Ads opened to Indian advertisers on 4 September 2026 at Rs 725 a day. Access is not the hard part any more. Being the brand the answer recommends, before anyone reads the ad underneath it, is.
On 4 September 2026 OpenAI opened the ChatGPT Ads Manager to Indian advertisers. Rupee billing, no invitation, no minimum commitment, Rs 725 a day to start.
So let’s be clear about what you are not buying from us. You are not buying access. You could open an account this afternoon with a company card and be live before dinner. Any agency telling you they have special entry to this platform is selling you something that stopped being scarce on 4 September.
What is scarce is knowing how the surface behaves. ChatGPT ads sit underneath an answer. If that answer recommends your competitor, your ad is the consolation prize on someone else’s endorsement. Buying the slot without owning the response is the most expensive mistake available in this channel right now, and almost every brand entering it is about to make it.
We have been running ChatGPT Ads on upGrowth’s own account since 2 September 2026. Not a client’s budget. Ours. These are the platform-reported rates:
Read those against what this channel cost at launch. The US invite-only pilot ran at roughly $60 CPM, about Rs 5,000. We are paying under a ninth of that. And a 4.25% click-through rate is roughly 4x what Meta placements commonly return in India.
The honest caveat, because you should distrust anyone who does not give you one. This is 1 campaign, 1 advertiser, 1 objective and a handful of days. It is a real data point from a real account, not an industry benchmark. Rates will climb as advertisers arrive. Anyone publishing “India ChatGPT Ads benchmarks” 2 weeks after launch is guessing, and we are not going to pretend otherwise to win a deal.
Most agencies about to pitch you ChatGPT Ads are performance shops who will treat it as another placement. Run creative, watch CPC, report weekly.
That misreads the surface. In a conversational result there is one response and one sponsored slot beneath it. Both are winnable and they are won by completely different work.
The response is won through Generative Engine Optimization. Entity presence, structured data, citation-worthy content, the things that make ChatGPT name you unprompted. It compounds and it costs nothing per impression.
The slot beneath is won by bidding. It is instant, it is rented, and it stops the day you stop paying.
Run only the ads and you rent attention on a page that recommends someone else. Run only GEO and you leave a purchasable slot to a competitor. We have been building GEO for Indian brands since before this ad product existed, which is why we treat these as one system with one budget rather than two line items in different decks.
Skip us if any of these apply.
We are not an OpenAI agency partner. When ChatGPT Ads launched in India, OpenAI named WPP and Omnicom as its first agency partners. We are not on that list and we are not going to imply otherwise.
What that status buys is direct support from OpenAI. It does not gate who can advertise, it does not affect your auction, and it does not mean a holding company will care about a Rs 3 lakh test budget. We run the same self-serve platform every advertiser in India uses. The difference is that we have been running it since week 1 and we own the organic half of the result.
Every engagement opens with a paid AI visibility diagnosis. We check what ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini currently say when your buyers ask the questions that matter, whether your entity and structured data can support paid placement, and whether your conversion tracking is actually trustworthy.
You get the findings whether or not you work with us. If the diagnosis says paid placement is not your bottleneck, we will say so and tell you what is.
Retainers begin at Rs 1.5 lakh a month. Media management is charged as a flat fee or 12% of ad spend, whichever is higher. Fractional CMO engagements start at Rs 3 lakh a month.
Yes. Ads went live for Indian users on 27 August 2026 and the self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager opened to Indian advertisers on 4 September 2026 at ads.openai.com. Billing is in rupees and the minimum daily budget is Rs 725. No invitation or agency relationship is required.
The floor is Rs 725 per day with no minimum commitment. In upGrowth’s own live account we are seeing an average CPM of Rs 581.22, an average CPC of Rs 13.67 and a 4.25% click-through rate on a Clicks-objective campaign. Expect rates to rise as more advertisers enter the auction.
Adult users on the Free and Go tiers. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education subscribers do not see ads at all. Ads are also not shown to accounts identified as belonging to users under 18.
No. OpenAI states that ads are labelled as sponsored, kept visually separate from the response, and do not influence the organic answer. That separation is exactly why organic AI visibility still matters even when you are buying placement.
No. OpenAI named WPP and Omnicom as its first India agency partners at launch. We run campaigns on the same self-serve platform available to every advertiser. Partner status affects access to OpenAI support, not who is permitted to buy or how the auction treats you.
If you have to choose, GEO. Organic citation compounds and takes 3 to 6 months to build, while ads can be switched on in an afternoon. The stronger answer is to start GEO now and run a small ads test alongside it, because auction rates are cheaper today than they will be in 6 months and the learning is worth more than the spend.
