Building a search-ready website for a Swiss language school

brief
The XLINGUA Story

XLINGUA (xlingua.ch) is a Swiss language school that teaches German to professionals, expats, founders, and corporate teams. It also offers English, French, and Italian. Courses run from A1 to C2, with dedicated preparation for the telc, Goethe, TestDaF, and fide exams.

The school teaches through its own speaking-first XLINGUA Flow method. It serves learners in Zurich, Bern, Basel, Lucerne, and Winterthur, and it runs corporate training, private lessons, and a Founders cohort. The website is trilingual, in German, English, and French, and carries more than 120 URLs in its sitemap.

For a school that sells on teaching quality, the website had to do the first job of a good teacher. It had to clearly explain what XLINGUA offers to the right person, in the right language.

Identified
Identified Challenges
  • We started with a manual on-page SEO, GEO and AEO review alongside a Semrush site audit. The website had strong content intent, but several technical issues were limiting its visibility.
  • The multilingual setup was sending inconsistent language signals, with incorrect HTML lang attributes, missing hreflang tags, and broken language URLs. Crawl and indexation were also affected by sitemap errors, 404 pages, and AI crawlers being blocked through robots.txt.
  • Structured data was another major gap. 72 Course items were invalid, the FAQ page had roughly 45 questions without FAQPage schema, and several commercial pages were missing breadcrumb markup.
  • On-page issues such as duplicate title suffixes, weak meta descriptions, inconsistent review signals, and thin content across 82 pages further limited the site’s ability to rank for relevant searches.
  • Early keyword data confirmed the problem: XLINGUA had only five keywords in the top 20, and several of its strongest rankings were for similarly named language schools rather than its own courses.

Scope of engagement

We worked as an extension of the XLINGUA team. The engagement covered the website foundation, organic growth, and the sales material that supported both.

  • Technical and on-page SEO audits with a prioritised fix list marked Critical, High, Medium, and Low.
  • Recommended title tags, meta descriptions, and H1 copy for every page that needed one.
  • JSON-LD schema for the sitewide organisation graph, FAQ, breadcrumbs, articles, courses, and the founder profile.
  • Keyword research built on Switzerland search data, with each keyword mapped to a target page.
  • A hub-and-spoke blog programme with pillar and cluster articles.
  • GEO and AEO recommendations so AI engines can read, trust, and cite the site.

The objective

We set four objectives at the start.

  • Give the website a clean technical base that search engines and AI crawlers can read.
  • Send correct language and structure signals across German, English, and French.
  • Grow organic traffic from searches that show real intent to learn German in Switzerland.
  • Make XLINGUA visible and citable inside AI answer engines such as ChatGPT.

The upGrowth Strategy

We followed a simple order. Diagnose first, fix the foundation, then build content on top. Writing blogs on a site with broken sitemaps and invalid schema would have wasted the effort.

Foundation and technical fixes

We handed the development team a checklist that separated template-level fixes from page-level fixes. Many of the flagged items shared one cause. The 72 invalid Course items, for example, all reported the same missing field, so one corrected template addressed the whole set.

One item needed a business decision rather than a build. Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt works against the goal of AI visibility, so we asked leadership to confirm intent before making any changes. XLINGUA confirmed AI visibility was the priority and updated robots.txt to allow ClaudeBot, GPTBot, Google-Extended, and PerplexityBot.

Structured data and AEO readiness

Schema was the largest single gap, and the one with the most upside for answer engines. We wrote the schema and specified where it should sit.

Content and blog programme

We built a hub-and-spoke blog so each article supported a commercial page. Pillar articles covered the broad topics, and cluster articles answered the specific questions behind them. The programme included:

Each article shipped with its own JSON-LD schema and cleaned HTML. We also wrote the recurring LinkedIn newsletter The Speaking Gap for the founder, with each issue tied to a published article.

Impact

Organic traffic to xlingua.ch grew as the technical and content programme took effect.

Traffic from AI engines, including ChatGPT, also increased alongside organic search visibility. XLINGUA is now being mentioned and cited in AI search environments, with users visiting the website from those sources and signing up for courses.

The figures below are based on GA4 and Google Search Console.

Strategic learnings

Conclusion

XLINGUA came to us with a well-built brand and a website that was hiding it. The pages existed, the courses were clear, and the teaching method had a point of view. The signals search engines and AI engines rely on were missing or wrong.

We fixed those signals first, then built content that gave the site something to rank for. As a result, organic and AI-referred traffic have both grown, and XLINGUA now has a technical base, a keyword map, and a content engine it can keep building on.

Today the site is easier for a search engine to crawl, easier for an AI engine to quote, and easier for a prospective student in Zurich or Bern to trust.
