Gemini and Google AI Overviews: variable by vertical. Gemini behaves more like AIO because both pull from Google’s retrieval index. Citation share depends heavily on vertical. In B2B Tech, top 20 organic ranking still correlates with citation likelihood. In Finance and eCommerce, it does not.

Perplexity loves dense, data-rich content with visible timestamps. Perplexity gives the largest citation lift to sources that include specific statistics with named citations, visible last-updated dates within the past 13 weeks, and clean H2 structure that maps to user queries. ChatGPT weights authority and originality hardest. Named authors with verifiable credentials, proprietary data, and content that demonstrably does not exist elsewhere get cited disproportionately on ChatGPT. Reworded or summarized content gets skipped. ChatGPT is also the most sensitive to brand authority signals; mentions on authoritative third-party domains lift ChatGPT citation share more than they lift Perplexity citation share.

Directional guesses are expensive. You need a measurable gap before you can justify the investment to close it. Here is the framework:
